Five days before season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, a green stencil appeared on a broken Los Angeles sidewalk: Earth Kingdom Public Works. The tag was real, sprayed on a real crack. Then the film: a foot steps on it, the concrete splits, the earth shifts, and the sidewalk opens onto the Earth Kingdom before the season’s footage takes over.

Posted on the Netflix Avatar account as the launch of the earthbenders. People went to find the tag in the street. The post passed 30K likes, the account went past 650K followers, and the comments did the rest.
